measured spectrophotometrically. (To avoid further confusion, I will use only O2sat and SO2 for the remainder of this article.) CO-oximetry, a more complex and reliable method, measures the concentration of hemoglobin derivatives in the blood, the results of which are then used to calculate various parameters such as hemoglobin derivative fractions (e.g., FO2Hb), total hemoglobin, and oxygen saturation. In most patients, the results—O2sat, SO2, and FO2Hb—from these three methods are virtually identical. But in cases of dyshemoglobinemia, some methods can yield misleading results, so health care professionals need to understand the differences between these methods and the limitations of each. This article will review the basics of oxygen-

Tissue Oxygenation Monitoring as a Guide for Trauma Resuscitation.

Hypoperfusion is the most common event preceding the onset of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome during trauma resuscitation. Detecting subtle changes in perfusion is crucial to ensure adequate tissue oxygenation and perfusion. Traditional methods of detecting physiological changes include measurements of blood pressure, heart rate, urine output, serum levels of lactate, mixed venous oxygen sa...

مقایسه اندازه‌گیری اشباع اکسیژن خون شریانی با پالس اکسی‌متری و نمونه خون شریانی در بیماران بخش مراقبت‌های ویژه قلبی

Background: Pulseoximetry is widely used in the critical care setting, currently used to guide therapeutic interventions. Few studies have evaluated the accuracy of SPO2 (puls-eoximetry oxygen saturation) in intensive care unit after cardiac surgery. Our objective was to compare pulseoximetry with arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) during clinical routine in such patients, and to examine the eff...

Accident and emergency departments are still failing to assess asthma severity.

OBJECTIVES To quantify the documentation of vital signs in children attending accident and emergency (A&E) for asthma and to assess whether indicators of severity were used appropriately. METHODS Records of all children aged 3 to 14 attending A&E for the treatment of asthma in four London hospitals over a three month period were examined for documentation of heart rate, respiratory rate, peak...

The role of faecal coliforms in water quality assessment

The paper aims to evaluate the role of faecal coliforms in assessment of water quality. The study was conducted on the Neretva River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The sampling was performed bimonthly, over 12 months at seven selected sites. APHA (1995) methods were used. The raw data of temperature, pH, conductivity, oxygen saturation, nitrogen, total phosphorus, and faecal coliforms were transfor...

Arterial blood gas analysis or oxygen saturation in the assessment of acute asthma?

BACKGROUND A study was undertaken to determine if arterial blood gas estimation is always necessary in the assessment of patients presenting to hospital with acute severe asthma, or whether oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry is a reliable screening test for predicting those in respiratory failure. METHODS A prospective study was conducted in a specialist respiratory medical unit....
